Before Transfer Google Drive Owner

Before you start to transfer Google Drive owner, there are some things you need to pay attention to:

  1. It’s recommended to move files to the shared drive since other members can still access these files if the user leaves or is deleted.
  2. Make sure the current user is not on Litigation Hold.
  3. Check the storage usage of the new owner and make sure the owner has enough storage space.

How to transfer Google Drive owner on Windows PC? Follow the steps below.

Step 1: Open your browser and go to your Google Drive homepage.

Step 2: Next, go to the file you want to transfer ownership of. Then, right-click it and then select the Share option.

Step 3: If you haven’t shared the file with anyone yet, you can add someone from the Share settings window that appears. Simply type their email address into the Add People And Groups text box.

Step 4: Once a valid email address is added, the window will transform to allow you to change the recipient’s permission level (Editor, Commenter, or Viewer), notify the person that the file was shared with them, and the option to include a message. When you’re done, click the Send button.

When you send an ownership transfer request, there are possible results:

  • The new owner will receive an email that notifies him to accept the transfer. If they accept the transfer request, they will become the file owner. Until then, you are still the owner.
  • The new owner is promoted to editors unless they are already editors.
  • If the new owner accepts, you will be demoted to the editor. The new owner can delete you.
  • If the new owner declines, you are still the owner.

How to Accept/Decline an Ownership Transfer Request

You get an email when someone requests a file transfer. You can accept or decline the invitation. You can also search in Drive for files pending a response to an ownership transfer request.

Step 1: Open your browser and go to your Google Drive homepage.

Step 2: In the search bar at the top, enter pending owner:me.

Step 3: Right-click the file or files you want to respond to.

Step 4: Click the Share people icon and the Accept ownership? option will appear. Then, you can choose Accept or Decline.
