How to Set Up Nintendo Switch

Setting up a new Nintendo Switch is a long process. You’ll need to charge the console, set up the dock, and go through the initial system setup process. Use the steps below to set up and configure your new Nintendo Switch.

Console Unboxing and Setup

Step 1. Take the Nintendo Switch out of the box. The following items are included in the new Nintendo Switch box.

  • Nintendo Switch Tablet Console
  • Left and right Joy-con controllers
  • Nintendo Switch Dock
  • Joy-con controller strap
  • Joy-con controller
  • AC adapter
  • HDMI cable

Step 2. Connect the joy-con controller to the tablet console. Joy-con controllers are two accessories that contain an analog stick and four action buttons plus a “+” or “-” button. Slide the rail on the side of the joy-con controller into the side of the console to attach the joy-con controller. The joy-con with the “-” button is on the left. The joy-con with the “+” button is on the right.

Step 3. The back of the dock includes USB, USB-C, and HDMI ports. You can use the USB port for other accessories or controllers. USB-C lets you plug in a power cord, while HDMI lets you connect your device to your TV. Plug in the appropriate power cord and place the Switch in the dock. The screen should be facing the thinner end of the dock.

Tips:

If you have a Nintendo Switch Lite, you cannot dock it. Skip this step.

Step 4. Place the Nintendo Switch on the dock to charge. Place the console into the slot on top of the Nintendo Switch with the screen facing the same direction as the Nintendo Switch logo on the front. If inserted correctly, the lower left corner of the Nintendo Switch dock will have a blinking green light.

It takes about three and a half hours to charge the console. The console also charges the joy-con controllers when connected. You can also charge the console by connecting a USB-C charger to the port on the bottom of the Nintendo Switch console.

Initial System Setup

The setup is the same for all Switch devices, covering Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, and Nintendo Switch (OLED model).

Step 1. Take the Nintendo Switch out of the dock and turn it on the Nintendo Switch.

Step 2. Select a language, region, Wi-Fi network, and time zone.

Tips:

To select an item on the Nintendo Switch, you can double-tap it on the screen, or use the left joy-con controller to navigate to it, then press the A key on the right joy-con controller to select it.

Step 3. Then Create New User.

Tips:

If you're moving from an existing Nintendo Switch console, click Import a User.

Step 4. Select your profile icon. Choose to link your Nintendo account or choose to do it later.

Step 5. Add another user or click Skip. Click Skip or select Set Up Parental Controls now to set up Toggle Parental Controls.
