Way 1. Update Kindle Firmware via Settings
- Tap anywhere on the screen and select the downward-facing arrow on the topmost section of the screen.
- Tap on All Settings > Device Options > Advanced Options.
- Tap on Update Your Kindle. If the Kindle is connected to Wi-Fi, it will start updating the firmware.
Sometimes, the Update Your Kindle button may be greyed out. In most cases, the reason is that your Kindle reader doesn’t have an active internet connection or it is already on the latest version of the software.
How to check whether your Kindle is using the latest firmware version? Here is the way:
Step 1: Check the currently installed Kindle firmware version.
- Tap anywhere on the screen and select the downward-facing arrow.
- Tap on All Settings > Device Options.
- Tap on the three dots icon in the upper right corner and select Device Info. You can check the Firmware Version
Step 2: Go to the Amazon Kindle Software Update page. Find the firmware update suitable for your Kindle device and check the version number. If the version is higher than the currently installed Kindle firmware version, it means that your Kindle needs to update the firmware.
If your Kindle isn’t using the latest firmware version and you have connected it to Wi-Fi, but the Kindle update still fails. Then, you can use the second way to update your Kindle.
Way 2. Update Kindle Firmware via PC
Step 1: Go to the Amazon Kindle Software Update page again. This page is offered by Amazon, allowing users to download Kindle software updates to PCs. Then, users can update their Kindle readers via the PC. Find the firmware update suitable for your Kindle and download it. The Kindle software update file should be a BIN file.
Step 2: Connect the Kindle to your PC with a USB cable. Open the File Explorer. A Kindle drive should appear. Open the Kindle drive and drag and drop the downloaded Kindle update file to the drive.
Step 3: Go back to your Kindle reader and tap on All Settings > Device Options > Advanced Options again. Tap on Update Your Kindle. The Kindle software update should be completed.
