Microsoft Removes Windows 10 1903 Upgrade Blocks

According to reports, the installation rate of Windows 10 May 2019 Update, version 1903 is very low. One of the reasons for this is that Microsoft has blocked many users from upgrading due to a number of problems regarding software and hardware compatibility.

Now, perhaps many users choose to install the new Windows 10 update since this company has removed some of these upgrade blocks after resolving the associated problems. If users follow the Windows Update Twitter account, they may have seen them.

On the release information page for Windows 10 May 2019 Update, Microsoft lists three issues that have been resolved. Now, let’s see them one by one.

Microsoft removes Windows 10 1903 upgrade blocks

Loss of Functionality in Dynabook Smartphone Link App

This issue was firstly reported in late May. After upgrading to Windows 10 version 1903, some users might encounter a loss of functionality when using the Dynabook Smartphone Link app on their Windows devices.

This problem may have an influence on phone numbers in the Call menu to display and impact the capability of answering phone calls on Windows PCs. Then, Microsoft has applied a compatibility hold on devices with this app to safeguard the update experience.

Currently, Microsoft has fixed this issue and the compatibility hold has been removed.

Audio Not Working with Dolby Atmos Headphones and Home Theatre

The second issue is that users may experience an audio loss with Dolby Atmos for home theater (free extension) or headphones (paid extension) because of a licensing configuration error.

The problem happened since users couldn’t connect to the Dolby Atmos app and enable Dolby Atmos extensions due to an issue with a Microsoft Store licensing component. To protect the update experience, Microsoft also applied a protective hold on Windows 10 version devices.

Now, this issue is also fixed and the safeguard hold has been removed.

Error Attempting to Update with External USB Device or Memory Card Attached

The PC can’t be upgraded to Windows 10 when users try to update Windows with external USB devices or SD cards. This is one of the issues first reported in the May 2019 Update. This occurs because of the incorrect drive reassignment during the system installation process.

Similarly, Microsoft blocked Windows 10 May 2019 Update on PCs with USB drives or SD cards by applying a hold on PCs. Now, Microsoft also removes compatibility hold.

Note: Microsoft removes Windows 10 1903 upgrade blocks now. But users should note that it can take up to 48 hours before updating to Window 10 V1903.

Microsoft Blocks Surface Book 2 Owners from Upgrading to Windows 10 V1903

After Microsoft removes Windows 10 May 2019 Update blocks, this company also confirms Surface Book 2 problem.

On some Surface Book 2 devices configured with Nvidia discrete graphics processing unit (dGPU) have a compatibility issue. If the device installs Windows 10 version 1903, some apps or games requiring graphics intensive operations may close or fail to open.

For devices that have already installed the update, a full restart or scan for hardware changes in the Devices Manager is helpful to mitigate the issue. Microsoft now blocks Surface Book 2 users from upgrading to version 1903 and it is working on a fix.

Note: This is not the first time that Surface Book 2 users encounter the Windows update issue. Last year, the Surface Book 2 owners experienced a blue screen after installing Windows 10 October 2018 Update.

Final Words

According to a support document for helping users to troubleshoot update problems, there are five compatibility update blocks in place for Windows 10 May 2019 Update.

To keep the Windows operating system running properly, we strongly recommend backing up the OS with MiniTool ShadowMaker – Windows backup software before any Windows update to roll Windows back to its previous state in case the system goes wrong.
