Seagate Nytro 1000 SATA SSD Series with DuraWrite Technology

Seagate, a Hard Disk Drive (HDD) maker as well as the data storage device manufacturer recently announced the launch of a new Solid State Drive (SSD) series of drives equipped with SandForce’s DuraWrite Technology.

Although Seagate’s main business is still HDD hard drives, they are also expanding its NAND/SSD business, focusing on the enterprise market. Seagate also introduced a number of SSD hard drives before, but did not emphasize the DuraWrite technology.

The Seagate Nytro 1000 SATA SSD series, including the Nytro 1351 and Nytro 1551 SSDs, has been created to provide users with ultra-fast, consistent performance for read-intensive workloads.  The Seagate Nytro 1000 SATA SSD series will be available in the fall of 2018, and there is no price information announced by Seagate yet.

The long-term NAND supply agreement between Seagate and Toshiba Memory has finally come into effect. Equipped with TLC (triple-level cell) 64-layer 3D NAND chips from the Japanese supplier, the Nytro 1000-series SSDs were designed to replace conventional hard drives commonly found in data centers. And as a result, they utilize a standard SATA connection.

The capacities of Nytro 1351 and Nytro 1551 vary from 240GB to 3.8TB. Both SSDs are also identical in performance and their sequential read and write speeds are up to 560MB/s and 535MB/s, respectively. Random access performance is rated at 94,000 IOPS reads and 55,000 IOPS writes.

However, the real reason that separates the Nytro 1351 and Nytro 1551 from rival SSDs on the market isn’t their performance or specification but the unique lossless data reduction technology.

One of the exclusive features of Seagate Nytro 1000 SATA SSD series lies in its Seagate DuraWrite technology, also known as the unique lossless data reduction technology. It compresses data flowing through Seagate’s internally-developed controller, which could greatly improve the read and write speed of SSD. The NAND inside the SSD is very sensitive to the accumulated data written on it. The more data written to flash, the shorter the SSD’s service life will be. And its performance will also degrade very soon. 

By using intelligent lossless compression techniques, Seagate’s DuraWrite technology reduces the amount of data stored on the flash. “No other company offers this type of technology,” says Yev Koup, enterprise SSD product marketing manager. “Having less data to write leads to better SSD endurance and performance.”

The Nytro SSD offers impressive speeds, with random-write performance of 55,000 IOPS (input/output operations per second), making it well-suited for the most demanding database and cloud environments, Koup explains.

Thanks to DuraWrite, Seagate claims that the Nytro 1351 and Nytro 1551’s random-write performance is 3.5 times higher than other SSDs while also being more power efficient and cost-effective.

Koup says that the Nytro SSD line supports “tunable capacity”, which means data center managers get the flexibility to optimize the drive for performance or capacity considerations. In addition, it comes with a range of Seagate Secure data-protection options for peace-of-mind security.

The Nytro 1351 has an endurance of 1DWPD (drive writes per day), while the higher-end Nytro 1551 is rated for 3DWPD. Both models come with a variety of Seagate Secure data protection options and backed by a five-year warranty.
